Installing Tellstick Windows Drivers

In order for NetHome to be able to communicate with the Tellstick transceiver, you must install drivers that make the Tellstick appear as an COM-port. These drivers are available from FTDI, but since the Tellstick device has its own product id, we must modify the installation files a bit so it also accepts this id as a serial port. Unfortunately this small change breaks the signing of the drivers which makes the installation a bit more messy. The instructions below are for Windows 7, but should work for all versions of Windows.

The modified drivers are available in the NetHome-release under the drivers\windows\FTDI_VCP-folder.

Installation steps

1. Insert the Tellstick in an USB-port. After a while Windows will complain that it could not find the drivers.

2. Open the device manager window. This can be done for example by typing “mmc devmgmt.msc” in the search field in the start menu:

3. In the top of the device manager window you will see Tellstick as an unidentified device. Right click on it and select “Update drivers”.

4. A dialog appears where you can chose to either search automatically for drivers or choose manually. Select to choose manually.

5. In the next dialog, click “Browse” and select the folder in the NetHome-distribution with the drivers (drivers\windows\FTDI_VCP) and then press “Next”

6. Windows will now complain that it could not verify the the publisher of the drivers (since we have added a new product id), choose to install the driver anyway. The serial converter driver will now be installed.

7. In the bottom section you will now see the Tellstick Serial Converter. Right click on it and select properties:

8. In the “Advanced”-tab, check the “Load VCP” checkbox and press ok.

9. Unplug the Tellstick and plug it in again. Windows will now discover a new device it cannot find the drivers for. In the top section of the device manager you will see a serial port that is not identified.

10. Repeat steps 3-6 for the serial port.

11. In the Ports-section there should now be a serial port called Tellstick Serial Port. Take note which com port number it was assigned (COM8 for example) as this is the name you will use in NetHomeServer.
